Keep Going with Casey Griffin<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\nAfter writing for nearly a decade now, facing all sorts of ups and
\ndown to get my career off the ground, the best piece of advice I can give you
\nis to be flexible<\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis book is THE ONE<\/i>\u2026 Right?<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMaybe you\u2019re working on your first book, or maybe you\u2019ve been
\nwriting for years. I know that the book you\u2019re currently working on feels like the one<\/i>. And who knows? Maybe it is.
\nMaybe you\u2019ll be one of the lucky ones who wrote the right book at the right
\ntime and got it into the right hands. But what if it\u2019s not the one<\/i>? <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWhat if you place all your writing hopes and dreams on that one book
\nand then it doesn\u2019t sell? Or a publisher picks up another book exactly like it
\nweeks before you\u2019ve finished yours? Or the industry shifts its focus away from
\nits obsession with vampires \/ werewolves \/ zombies \/ fairies \/ etc? What if
\nyour book is left in the dust with no home? Plenty of mine certainly were.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWhen your book
\ndoesn\u2019t sell\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSure, there\u2019s always self-publishing, but then what? This book was
\nsupposed to be the one<\/i>. It was
\nsupposed to be flying off the bookshelves by now. You were supposed to
\nattending the premiere of the movie based on your story that was directed by
\nJoss Whedon. You were supposed to be so stinking rich that you bought your
\nneighbor\u2019s house just so you could extend your garden. And the publishing houses
\nwere supposed to be banging your door down, begging you for the sequel. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIf your first book truly turns out to be the one<\/i>, then I congratulate you (and please get ahold of me after
\nthis post to tell me your secret). But if it\u2019s not, listen up: don\u2019t limit
\nyourself by putting all your eggs in one basket, err\u2026book. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBe persistent. Not
\ninflexible.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nI was never amazing in English class, I never studied literature in
\nuniversity, and I only got into reading for pleasure after I graduated. So did
\nI think my first book was going to be the next big thing? No. Did I hope it was?
\nYes. Was it unrealistic? Probably. But did I stop there? Absolutely not!<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nYA Fantasy was my first love\u2014Oh, Harry Potter, what a monster you\u2019ve
\ncreated. So naturally, when I began writing, I wrote fantasy. When my first
\nnovel went nowhere, I wrote another YA fantasy. Sure, it kick-started my career
\npath by placing me in the finals of the ABNA contest, but it never made it to
\nthe shelves. But that was okay. I had plenty more ideas where that came from.
\nSo I wrote another fantasy. And then another. I was limiting myself by fixating
\non a single genre.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBy opening your
\nown eyes, you can open up your opportunities. <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nEventually, I listened to the wise advice of my agent who kept
\nencouraging me to try my hand at contemporary. I\u2019d resisted for a long time,
\nthinking, \u201cBut all I know is fantasy.\u201d Well, it turns out that since I live in
\nreality\u2014occasionally\u2014I guess I can write about it too. And I was really happy
\nwith the results. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOnce I stepped out of the box I\u2019d put myself into, I found there was
\nno limit to what I could write. In fact, when one of my now-editors approached
\nme and asked, \u201cDo you write adult romance?\u201d I was like, \u201cI do now!\u201d Because,
\nsuddenly, I could write anything and still find storylines I felt just as
\npassionate about. I just needed to be open to it. That doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t go
\nback to writing fantasy. It just means that I\u2019m better able to roll with the
\npublishing punches and bounce back from rejection. It made me a well-rounded
\nwriter. It made me more likely to get published.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDon\u2019t wait for the
\npublishing tides to turn your way. Chart your own course.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nTimes change in the publishing industry. Fads come and go, and then
\ncome around again. Sometimes you think you\u2019ve found your voice, only to be told
\nit sounds nothing like you. It\u2019s not just about being persistent after
\nrejection. I was certainly persistent with my fantasy obsession, but I wasn\u2019t
\nhelping myself any, was I? <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIt\u2019s about being flexible, trying new things, exploring new genres
\nand voices. That\u2019s how we grow as writers and how we learn new things about
\nourselves and our art. One of my editors was the first person who told me that
\nmy writing was humorous. I\u2019m funny? Who knew? I always thought people were
\nlaughing at me, not with me \ud83d\ude42 And I never would have known if I hadn\u2019t written
\nSecrets of a Reluctant Princess.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cYou never fail
\nuntil you stop trying.\u201d \u2013 Albert Einstein <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDon\u2019t feel disheartened if your current book doesn\u2019t sell. Writing
\nis a process, we learn, we grow, we constantly improve our craft. Rejection is
\njust part of the process. Not a failure. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLooking back, I\u2019m happy my first book didn\u2019t sell. I bet if I read
\nit today, I\u2019d think it was terrible. But I wouldn’t be where I am or have
\ndeveloped the skills I possess today without that first book, or the second, or
\nthe third\u2026 <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThere is no failure in the path to publication unless you give up
\ntrying. No matter how many books it takes, if you truly love writing, you\u2019re
\nstill doing something you enjoy regardless of the outcome. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

\nof your comfort zone. What can it hurt? It will only make you a better writer. <\/o:p><\/span><\/b>
