Bookworms to Butterflies – The Social Media Metamorphosis

Calling all bookworms! Authors, illustrators, librarians, teachers, booksellers, agents, editors, book bloggers, readers, and everyone who loves the smell of books – let’s finally migrate from Twitter to Bluesky!

A graphic, with the words "Bookworms feeling like this?" and a blue bird with a worm in its mouth over the words "Prefer to feel like this?" and a butterfly with words in its wings.

Why I’m Finally Migrating

Like many of you, I’ve been on Twitter for ages (since 2010 for me), back when our biggest complaint was the fail whale (sigh, such simpler times). I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the bird site ever since. I spend WAY too much time doom-scrolling, but I’ve also met incredible people and even discovered the manatee fart fact that led to my first published book!

Since I’m a word nerd, Twitter was so much easier for me than the other platforms. It’s also where I’ve built my largest following. But then . . .

Two years ago, a certain billionaire decided to turn Twitter into his personal misinformation playground. As soon as I could score an invite code, I created a Bluesky account, and then… did absolutely nothing with it. I loved the Twitter community I was part of and had serious FOMO about leaving. Plus, I didn’t have the energy to add another social media platform to my rotation.

But the changes to Twitter have made it worse and worse with each passing week. Accounts spewing hate are allowed free rein, paid blue checks consume all the space in the algorithm, and now they are removing the block feature, which was the only thing keeping the ravening beasts slightly at bay.

Add to that the fact that every tweet we write is being fed into Elon’s AI Grok (and that he will most likely also feed them to the upcoming authoritarian leadership), I know it’s finally time for me to move to greener pastures – or in this case bluer skies.

It’s still hard though because:

  1. I’m lazy and just don’t wanna do it.
  2. Leaving feels like fleeing, and I hate to concede ground to hate.
  3. I’m going to miss everyone on Twitter.

There’s not much I can do about #2 except remind myself that some battles have to be lost to win the war, and sticking around to absorb the hate flooding Twitter is not a constructive use of my time.

But to address #1 and #3, I’m hosting Bookworms to Butterflies: Migration Week!

I’ll be honest, since I haven’t really been on Bluesky, I’m far from an expert. But I’ve researched the various steps and will share what I learned to make the journey as smooth as possible.

And if we migrate together, then it’s a fun adventure rather than a chore. We can share tips and tricks, keep each other accountable, and remain connected.

Are you ready to start the migration?

Still Have Questions?

What is Bookworms to Butterflies: Migration Week?

Most importantly, it’s a week of book nerds connecting with each other! This virtual event is a collaborative effort to migrate people in the book community from Twitter to Bluesky. It’s designed to make the transition feel more like a party rather than a chore, help connect fellow book lovers, and offer opportunities to win prizes.

How do I join the Bookworms to Butterflies: Migration Week event?

Join using the sign-up form above. You should receive a confirmation email, so check your spam if you don’t see it. Make sure to click the Confirmation button in that email in order to receive the instructional emails on November 18th when Bookworms to Butterflies begins.

What if I’m new to Bluesky?

No worries, most of us are new to Bluesky! The whole point of Bookworms to Butterflies is for those of us who have been lingering on Twitter to start growing our community on Bluesky.

Can I participate if I already have a Bluesky account?

Absolutely! You should definitely still join us for Bookworms to Butterflies Week. If you’ve only moved over in the last few weeks (or even last few months), you might still be searching for friends from Twitter and other book community peeps, and this will be a great opportunity to make connections. And if you’ve been on Bluesky for a while, we’d LOVE to have you share tip and tricks for navigating this new space. And there’s a chance to win prizes, so come join the adventure!

Did you say prizes?

Yes! I am going full Oprah and awarding several prizes! There are two prizes for helping to spread the word (use the Refer Friends option in the sign-up form), and two prizes randomly awarded to folks who participate and have at least 100 followers by the end of the week. The four winners get to pick their choice from: a signed book, query critique, virtual class visit, ask me anything Zoom, or book cover animations.

What if I'm too busy the week of November 18th?

You should sign up anyway! Sure, we’re entering the holiday season, so time is a precious commodity, but a journey is alway more fun with lots of friends. Plus, the steps for migrating and connecting are broken down into small daily tasks that shouldn’t take much time. And even if you don’t have time that week, you can circle back to the emails later to have a roadmap for getting your Bluesky up and running (although you will miss out on the prizes).

What if I miss my friends on Twitter?

I totally get this, and it’s why I’ve resisted switching to Bluesky for so long. Twitter FOMO is real! But you don’t have to deactivate or delete your Twitter account. This event is about growing a new community on Bluesky. After building a new network, some of us will be ready to ditch the bird, while others of us (most likely me!) will have a hard time letting go of our doom-scrolling addition. So on the last day I’ll share various options for your current Twitter account, and you can decide what feels right for you.

If you still have any questions, please email me at jocelyn at adventuresinpuplishing dot com.

🚨WARNING🚨 Side effects may include: Reduced doom-scrolling • Increased genuine connections • Spontaneous bursts of creativity • Actually enjoying social media again • Sudden urge to post without anxiety • Dramatic decrease in eye-rolling • Unexpected butterfly pun usage • Slight addiction to better vibes

Results may vary. No bookworms, birds, or butterflies were harmed in the making of this migration journey.
