If you’re attending the SCBWI Los Angeles conference this summer, then you know there are many costs involved. From the conference fees to travel expenses, the sound of a cash register is practically ringing in your ears. But did you know that there are actually grants out there that can help offset these costs?
If you happen to be published and are considering dabbling in a genre you haven’t been published in previously, you should check out the Martha Weston Grant over at the SCBWI website. It offers a $1,500 grant to one lucky attendee. Entries must be postmarked by June 10th.
Check with your local chapter of SCBWI. Some award grants and scholarships for regional conferences. They may be offering help in getting to Los Angeles.
Once you’ve arrived in L.A., there are further opportunities to keep in mind. If you’ve already submitted a manuscript for critique in L.A., check out the Sue Alexander Award. From the pool of authors seeking critiques, one lucky writer and their manuscript will make their way to New York to meet with interested editors. And did I mention, all expenses paid?
For illustrators, the Portfolio Award hones in on the best art portfolio in the Juried Art Portfolio Display. The winner is the recipient of an all expense-paid trip to New York to meet with interested art directors.
Good luck!
Marissa
